Welcome to the New Genetics, Same Old Surgeries? project website. Here you can find more about the research we are doing, our questions and methods, the people involved and previous research connected to the communication of hereditary cancer.
Our website and logo were thoughtfully designed by Eyedea Studio, with careful consideration given to our project’s identity: one that is about specific genetic mutations and their risk to women’s health but that foregrounds the dominant cultural discourses and experiences of living with a heightened risk of gynaecological cancer.
The rationale behind the logo design
The icon at the heart of the NeGen-SOS identity brings together several layers of meaning in a single, unified form. Its central element is a generations figure: two curved forms facing each other in an embrace. They represent a mother and daughter. The mother faces right ~ towards the future. Together, the two figures echo the shape of the infinity symbol, suggesting the continuity of genetic inheritance across generations.
The Venus symbol is integrated into the base of the figure. This grounds the visual in women’s health without reducing it to a clinical reference. A hatched half-circle within the central form represents the carrier state ~ carrying a genetic mutation without necessarily experiencing its consequences. Two small circles, drawn from pedigree chart notation, subtly anchor the icon in the language of genetic medicine.
The intention was to hold these references lightly. The aim was for a visual that relects warmth and humanity rather than reaching for the visual language of medical institutions which might feel abstract, diagrammatic or even sterile. The NeGen-SOS icon acknowledges the clinical reality of hereditary cancer risk, while foregrounding the lived experience of the women at the centre of this research. The result is an identity that speaks to both the science and the story.
We look forward to using this space to share updates on our research as the project
