Stefania Vicari wrote a piece for The Conversation UK with Hannah Ditchfield to discuss how helpful social media content gets treated by platform algorithms.
The article is based on our interviews with dozens of people from around the world, especially women, who share their experience of hereditary cancer on social media.
🔹 All our participants expressed the intention to share information to help others, especially newly diagnosed families and underrepresented communities, who might struggle to find information about their condition;
🔹 These content creators are often aware of algorithmic recommender systems and make the most of them to get some visibility;
🔹 They told us of their experience of poor moderation, account suspension or shadowbanning, especially when they share images of their embodied experience (scars, stoma bags).
